38) Oil Painting (Basics)

In this course the students will learn to paint with oils as old masters did in 15-17 century Italy and Belgium. The technique is surprising easy, however it requires initial "seeing" excercises and drawing in depth before the actual painting begins.

Class Outline

-First Session:

Drawing what you see. How to turn off your brain.

-Second Session:

Drawing exercises: perspective, depth, shadow and light

-Third Session:

How to prepare canvas, reference pictures, how to take pictures, motive set up

-Fourth to Eighth Session:

Items to buy for this class

The students need to purchase all the materials they use in class because they need to work at home too. I suggest after the initial meeting they buy their materials and bring them with them.

-Table top easels
-Pallet knife
-Initially 7tubes of paint-  Primary yellow, Phthalo blue, Colbalt blue, alizarin red, cadmium red,Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, titanium white, mixing white, mars black.
-Reusable cloth- Cotton or Old t-shirts for example. No paper towel or microfiber please.
-3 Glass jars, marmelade jars are fine
-Linseed oil, bleached
-Drawing material

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Behnaz Larsen

Behnaz is an Iranian-American artist, though most of her galleries and clients reside in Europe. She has lived in six different countries and on-and-off in Qatar. Her approach to art is contemporary realism and her medium is usually oil on canvas. Her creations are extremely divers and difficult to encode. Her goal is happiness and awareness without guilt. 
She lives in Doha, Qatar.
