VCUQatar Presents Senior Showcase 3-6 May, 2010

The aim behind the Senior Showcase is to host a series of events that promote the creativity and innovation of VCUQatar’s graduating seniors. Over the course of the Senior Showcase week, visitors will see final thesis and other research projects of Graphic and Interior Design students, and a fashion show that presents the final portfolios of Fashion Design students.

VCUQatar is hosting potential employers based in Qatar and the surrounding region to visit its seventh annual Career Night on 3 May and meet the graduating seniors who will be presenting their professional portfolios. Company representatives looking for new talent will have the opportunity to meet students and discuss their work. Display stations will be staged in Rooms #9 and #18. Students will be present in front of their displays and discuss their work and career aspirations. Registration starts at 5:30 PM and the event is open from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Career Night is held in conjunction with the much anticipated Senior Exhibition that will run until 20 August, 2010. This juried exhibition showcases the final thesis projects plus a selection of the best work of VCUQatar senior students from the Fashion, Interior and Graphic Design departments while highlighting their creativity and innovation. The range of media used by students includes illustration, photography, typography and publication.

“This year we invited the senior students to submit their favorite work from any part of their study at VCUQatar,” said Jochen Sokoly, Gallery Director at VCUQatar. “The students have shown a lot of creativity and ingenuity in their designs,” he stated. “Students start with a particular source of inspiration and explore possibilities through their design ideas,” said Sandra Wilkins, chair of the Fashion Design Department. “They are making an identity statement, really,” she added. The reception for the Senior Exhibition will be held at the Gallery on 3 May at 6:00 PM and the event is open to the public.

Senior Showcase concludes on 6 May with VCUQatar’s 11th annual fashion show entitled ‘One of Many’ at 6:30PM in the atrium. The event is open to the public but seating is on a first-come-first-seated basis and tickets are available at 5:00 PM on event day.

“Senior Showcase is poised to become an annual when VCUQatar opens its doors to the professional community to inform and enlighten them about the deep levels of creativity and innovation that our students practice,” said Matthew Woolman, director of Design Entrepreneurship. “We especially invite recruiters and representatives from a wide range of industries to attend our Career Night and learn about how design can help their business.”

The reception to the Senior Exhibition is on 3 May at 6:00 PM at the Gallery in VCUQatar. The 11th Annual Fashion Show on 6 May starts at 6:30 PM and will be hosted in the VCUQatar atrium.
