The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar presents An Evening of Jazz and Art with the Doha Jazz Quartet on Tuesday, 9 November, 2010 at the atrium in VCUQatar.

The performance at 6:30 PM will be followed by a gallery talk. The event is open to the public.

To coincide with its current Gallery exhibition “New York Chronicles”, which is scheduled until 27 November 2010, VCUQatar is presenting an evening of jazz with the Doha Jazz Quartet in the intimate setting of the atrium at VCUQatar. Led by trumpeter Chris Coull since 2002, the quartet will deliver soulful and passionate bebop tunes from the golden era of jazz, the 40s and 50s as well as exhilarating offerings from icons such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Joined by renowned singer Mary Rambau for renditions of vocal classics by Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, the Doha Jazz Quartet promises a joyful evening with the best of jazz.

Although at first the combination of modern and contemporary fine art and jazz seems like an unlikely match, both areas of artistic expression developed in New York because of the city’s urban microcosm. Within the liberal and culturally diverse setting of New York an artistic explosion took place during and after World War II that has influenced global culture to the present day in both the visual and performing arts.

The performance will be followed by an informal talk about “New York Chronicles” in The Gallery with its co-curator Osama Abusitta. The event on 9 November starts at 6:30 PM and is open to the public. For more information, please visit www.qatar.vcu.edu call +974 44020555 or email Dr. Jochen Sokoly at [email protected]
