The theme for Tasmeem Doha 2019 will be "Hekayat" (the Arabic word for “stories”). It will feature workshops, exhibitions and prominent speakers from all over the world, and will take place on March 13-15, 2019

Tasmeem Doha, the international art and design conference at VCUarts Qatar in Education City has announced the theme for its upcoming conference which will take place on March 13-15, 2019.
The theme for Tasmeem Doha 2019 will be “Hekayat” (the Arabic word for “stories”). It will feature workshops, exhibitions and prominent speakers from all over the world.

Previous speakers at the conference, which began in 2004 at VCUarts Qatar, have included major artists and designers such as architect Rem Koolhaas, design company IDEO partner Tom Kelley, filmmaker and YouTube personality Casey Neistat, and Qatari-American writer Sophia Al-Maria.

Workshops at previous Tasmeem Doha conferences have seen participants produce bicycles from bamboo, paint Arabic script with light, design robots with characters and build a mini-golf course. The art and design conference takes place every two years and is free and open to the public.

The co-Chairs for Tasmeem Doha 2019 “Hekayat” are Hadeer Omar, Noha Fouad, Wajiha Pervez, and Yasmeen Suleiman, and are all VCUarts Qatar alumni.

Wajiha Pervez explained that, “Hekayat is about the conversation that happens between the start and end, the challenges and hurdles, and how you complete a journey. It’s all the layers that no one talks about.”
Noha Fouad echoed Wajiha, adding, “In highlighting the process, Hekayat levels the playing field. Stories are very relatable and invoke empathy. I may not relate to the whole, but I can connect with something in the process.”

Workshops at Tasmeem Doha 2019 “Hekayat” will include Ajrakh block printing, cross stitch embroidery, wooden spoon carving, and recordable greeting cards. It will involve student-led workshops, and exhibitions of student work and of international artists. There will also be a pop-up shop selling merchandise which has been specially designed for Tasmeem Doha 2019.

“There is no Hekayat without sharing, which speaks to the inclusivity of the event. At the core of that is the value of that exchange in all its forms. The more you engage, the more layers you find,” said Yasmeen Suleiman, VCUarts Qatar’s Materials Library Curator and conference co-chair.

“We started this journey 10 months ago. The four of us come from different backgrounds and disciplines, but we share the same vision for Hekayat. We wanted the opportunity to use Tasmeem Doha to share stories, rather than always be told stories by others,” said Hadeer Omar.

The creatives who will be conducting workshops during Tasmeem Doha 2019 will be Abduljabbar Khatri, Armor Gutiérrez Rivas, Gary Webb, Giovanni Innella, Nastassja Swift, Robin Cameron, Samer Fouad, Sufiyan Khatri, Tricia Treacy, and Wafa Ghnaim.

The conference at VCUarts Qatar in Education City will provide a platform where storytelling can be explored through various mediums, and stories can be shared and celebrated in a multitude of forms.
