Designs and Expertise by VCUarts Qatar on Display at Shop Qatar Design District

Shop Qatar Design District at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre took place from January 5-12, 2019, and designs and expertise by VCUarts Qatar alumni, students and faculty were prominent throughout.

Pop-up shops by VCUarts Qatar alumni Maryam Al Darwish, Tamader AlSultan, and Copper, by Aisha Al Mohannadi, Noor Stationary by Graphic Design student Noor Bahzad, and SR by fashion design Professor Sonali Raman were among its 75 pop-up shops at the week-long event.

The pop-up shops at the event showcased unique and varied offerings, as well as customized services and beauty services, designer boutiques, artisanal shops.

VCUarts Qatar also had a stand, and corsets designed by fashion design senior students were located prominently at the central, circular runway location where the audience was seated for the main fashion shows.

International fashion shows and master-classes were also part of the event and faculty and students from VCUarts Qatar took part in the master classes. Students worked as volunteers in various roles throughout the event, such as backstage for the designers. 

Interior Design alumni Begum Yigit, Gihad Ataalla, Graphic Design alumna Maryam Yousif, and Interior Design student Hagar Ataalla were involved in various aspects of the amazing exhibition design. 

Begum and another designer called Summer Moustafa created the concept, designed the floor plan of the event, produced branding elements and all the design elements such as free-standing sculptures, dining areas and furniture designs and the design of the uniquely hand drawn facades, and Gihad Ataalla worked with the team to produce the facade drawings with them. Hagar helped them with the outdoor food festival as well in which she arranged and created a layout for the food trucks. Maryam produced the map graphics for the venue.

The Shop Qatar Design District at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre was organized by the National Tourism Council, and by all accounts was very well attended and received by the many attendees.
