About this class

Entrepreneurship Talent Development: Jewelry Design is Collaboration with Bedaya 

This course will help students learn many aspects of the jewelry industry from learning the history of jewelry to turning their inspirations into designs and then further manufacturing them into wearable jewelry pieces. They will further be able to learn to market their jewelry, how to open a jewelry business and much more. By the end of the course, students should have a basic practical and theoretical understanding of the new techniques required to make jewelry and manufacturing of it. In addition, they would acquire better research and development skills and be able to express their ideas and thoughts creatively on paper and then manufacturing it into a jewelry piece.

To demonstrate a conceptual understanding of different fields in the jewelry industry.

Class Outline

Week1

Analysis of Cultural Interpretations Dedicated to Jewelry

            History of Jewelry (internationally)

             History of jewelry in the middle east (More specifically to Qatar)

            To introduce students to pioneers in the field of Jewelry design. (International and Local)

The Product: Designing Contexts and Values

             Introduction to Jewelry Design

            Learning to put inspirations on paper

            Introduction to Freehand Drawing

            Importance of multiple sketches

            Local inspirations (from designers and culture)

Week 2          

The Production Chain

            Use of Adobe illustrator in jewelry

            Understanding of negatives and positives

            Introduction to Rendering

            Introduction to Material

            Learning Line Control through pencils

            Shading Shapes with pencils

            Learning Line Control through brushes

            Shading Shapes with brushes

            Introduction to Silver and Gold Metal Rendering

            Introduction to the light source

            Flat surfaces and dome surfaces

Week 3          

Principals of Marketing and Branding & Sale Distributions and Communications Strategies

            Defining the marketing research problem and Developing

            Conducting Primary Research

            Conducting Secondary Research and syndicated sources of Secondary Research (Qualitative Research, Survey and Observation)

            Wholesale jewelry

            Selling designs instead of manufactured pieces

Week 5, 6, 7, 8, 9       

Production Phase

            Transferring of your jewelry drawing from paper to Metal

            Sawing

            Filing your jewelry piece

            Sanding

            Buffering to finish the piece

Week 10        

Showcasing and Selling

            The importance of jewelry displays online as well as in a shop

            Research of shops (how they display)
