About this class

This course will enable students to understand a variety of media and techniques to create fashion illustrations with different fashion fabrics. Participants will also be introduced to diverse fashion drawings and fashion illustrators. This course will provide an opportunity of placing two or more fashion figures in a page of portfolio drawing, in a way that reflects knowledge of fashion figures and design layout with a combination of lecture, demonstration, and studio time. 

Class Outline

Please note that this schedule is flexible and may change according to needs arising

  1. Brief introduction to the art of fashion illustration, major materials, and basic techniques. Introduce to gouache painting and values, lines, color theory. Begin with fashion figures with sketching guidelines.
  2. Draw fashion figures varying poses and sketch garments. Observational Drawing with pencils and charcoals.
  3. Brief introduction to design process to create a fashion collection (Non-conventional fashion design approach).
  4. Project I: Complete one or two looks corresponding to a chosen theme.
  5. Finish Project I and Presentation

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy some materials beforehand, label them with participant’s name and bring them to every class.

  • 1 A3 sketch pad for rough sketching
  • 1 A2 Newsprint paper pad for marker sketching
  • 1 chisel tipped black marker
  • Pencils of 2B and 4B
  • 1 artist eraser
  • 1 pencil sharpener
  • 1 ruler of about 18 inches
  • 1 pad of tracing paper in A3 (preferred). If not, A4 is fine
  • 1 roll of masking tape
  • Set of artist quality gouache paints (Recommend Winsor & Newton)
  • 1 A3 Gouache Paper Pad
  • Ceramic or Plastic Pallet with wells
  • Two water containers with a lid if possible
  • Set of brushes (suitable for gouache and watercolor) – Watercolor Brushes: No.12 or No.14 synthetic round, 1 or 2 inch flat or a large hake, No. 2 or No.4 flat synthetic with stiff bristles for scrubbing, a rigger or one of No.2 or No.4 synthetic round
  • Set of colored pencils (at least 12 colors) – optional
  • Black ink and a charcoal stick

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Yang Soon Ju

Yang Soon Ju (Elizabeth) is an interdisciplinary designer and entrepreneur with an MFA in Design Studies and a BFA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar.
She has engaged with numerous projects/events and developed designs/collections in partnership with community organizations: to name a few, Doha Film Institute, Tim MakowerArchitects, Sidra Medicine/Hospital, Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition, Doha Festival City, and Galeries Lafayette and Tasmeem Biennial Art and Design Conference. Her entrepreneurial positions in Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Qatar span two decades, ranging from founding an English-speaking school; textile trading, and designing/producing household items and specialty clothing, as well as marketing those products, to consulting in financial auditing/ bookkeeping and business management. In addition to her entrepreneurial initiatives, she currently teaches in the Fashion Design department and Continuing Education and Community/Continuing education programs at VCUarts Qatar.
