About this class

The course provides an introduction to the versatile field of storyboarding. Class discussions and demonstrations will cover different styles and techniques of sequential art used in live action film, animation and commercial applications. Through a combination of in-class and homework assignments, this course will teach you the necessary mechanics of visual storytelling and help you develop an individual and industry-typical style.

Class Outline
  • Introduction to storyboarding and the responsibilities of a storyboard artist.
  • Storyboarding guidelines.
  • Composition studies – How to create a compelling Mise en scène.
  • Storyboards for live-action/animation
  • Visual Components
  • Progression in the story and on screen. How to express mood and atmosphere in a shot.
  • Presentation and critiques
  • One-two-one – Instructor-student conference
  • Film practice: Camera angles and lenses
  • Film exercise. Observation of camera angles, shot design, sketching frames
  • Intro to Commercial storyboarding
  • Portfolio submission/review.

Items to buy for this class

  • Sketch-book, portable format (COPIC); alternatively A4 copy paper and clipboard
  • Pencils (HB or 2 HB)
  • Permanent ink pens (Staedler, Uni-ball, or a brand you feel comfortable with)
  • Marker: Copic or Prisma (W1, W3, W6, W9 or C1, C3, C6, C9)

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.
