Art Foundation Program

The Art Foundation program, or its credit equivalent from another institution, must be completed prior to applying for admissions into your major. The Art Foundation program is the first-year experience at VCUQatar designed to give students a broad range of hands-on experience in a variety of historic and contemporary media.

Through tangible studio practice, Art Foundation students refine their intellectual dexterity and develop a diverse skill set. Through the Art Foundation curriculum, students experience ideas and mediums that they would not encounter if they went directly into one of the Schools majors. The foremost goal of the Art Foundation program is to develop keen intellectual skills through observation, palpable studio technique, dialogue and peer interaction. Through these experiences, Art Foundation students develop a basis for self-criticism that will serve them throughout their majors and on into their professional life.

Transfer Credits

Students wishing to receive a transfer credit for studio classes must present
a portfolio or work from each completed course. Submission of official transcripts and full course descriptions or syllabi are also necessary.
Once the Registrar at VCUQatar has determined that we may consider credits from the particular university we then review the transcript and course description to see if the courses match VCU's degree objectives. If the courses are deemed to be equivalent, then we are able to transfer credits for those courses.

Portfolios of transfer students who have completed courses equivalent to the Art Foundation must demonstrate that they have both the range of exposure and quality of work required by VCUQatar in order to receive transfer credit. Upper level courses cannot be considered for transfer as Art Foundation equivalents, but will be considered for transfer into major departments once Art Foundation has been completed. Once a student is accepted into a major department, transcripts are re-evaluated and additional transfer credits can be granted by his or her major department. A course with a C minimum grade is eligible for transfer.

VCUQatar can award college level transfer credit for successfully completed high-school work to be determined individually by each subject covered and grade awarded from the following countries:

  1. British System of Education - A levels (13 years)
  2. Germany - Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife - Abitur (13 years)

Other Universities

Transfer applicants from other universities must be in good standing at the last institution attended and to be competitive should present a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 from all accredited institutions attended.

Candidates with fewer than 30 semester (45 quarter) hours also will be reviewed on the basis of their high school performance and SAT/ACT scores (if under the age of 22). Transfer applicants must follow the university admission criteria guidelines for freshmen applicants.

English Language

Please note that no credit can be accepted for English language academic courses studied in non-English speaking countries and these courses cannot be used in fulfillment of VUCQatar General Education requirements. The transferability of art and design classes will be evaluated on the basis of portfolios.
