Biography

Denielle Emans is an Assistant Professor in the Graphic Design Department, specializing in the area of experiential design in relation to the conceptualization, development, and execution of visual messages for social change and sustainability. Denielle is also a Ph.D. Candidate within the Centre for Communication and Social Change, based within the School of Communication and Arts, at the University of Queensland, one of Australia’s premier learning and research institutions. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University’s College of Design, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the United States.

Denielle has been involved in several competitive research grants and presented her work at a number of national and international conferences. She recently presented papers at LearnxDesign: The 3rd International Conference for Design Education Researchers in Chicago, Illinois; AIGA Design Education Conference, Spaces of Learning: Inside Outside Graphic Design Education in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Design with the other 90%: Changing the World by Design in Johannesburg, South Africa. Recent publications include "Sustainability at the forefront: educating students through complex challenges in visual communication and design" in the Interdisciplinary Environmental Review, Vol.16. (co-authored with Prof. Kelly Murdoch-Kitt and Dr. Kelly Norris Martin); "Design Nexus: integrating cross-cultural learning experiences into graphic design education" in Studies in Material Thinking: Re/materialising Design Education Futures, No.11. (co-authored with Prof. Kelly Murdoch-Kitt); and “Hybrid Learning for Social Design” in Tasmeem, No.3.
