Exotic locales and surprising narratives are highlighted in VCUQatar's Assistant Professor's chapbook Travels of a Gwai Lo
Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar's Assistant Professor of English Diana Woodcock has just had her chapbook entitled Travels of a Gwai Lo, one of the four in By Way of, published by Toadlily Press with a launch held recently at Katonah Museum of Art, New York.
Travels of a Gwai Lo includes 14 poems inspired by the years Diana Woodcock spent living and traveling in China, Thailand and Burma and is her first chapbook to be published.
By Way Of, the fifth book of the Quartet Series, to be published by Toadlily Press features the works of Diana Alvarez of Northampton, MA; Emily Carr of Quincy, Ill.; Matthew Nienow of Seattle, WA; and Diana Woodcock of Doha, Qatar. Of the four distinct voices collected in the book, poet Sean Nevin has written in the foreword that, "You will find a harmony and by way of (the) poems, you will come to recognize yourself." A reception and book signing at the Museum followed the reading on 4 October, 2009, which was funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
"As I'm still awaiting my complimentary copies to arrive here in Doha, it is hard for me to say how I feel about the book," said Ms. Woodcock. "I'm delighted that my chapbook was chosen to be included in it and I look forward to reading the other three chapbooks in By Way Of." Although she would have loved to meet the other three poets and the publishers of Toadlily Press,Ms. Woodcock could not participate in the launch reading early this month in New York due to her teaching responsibilities at VCUQatar.
Ms. Woodcock has Mandala,another chapbook forthcoming from Foothills Publishingsoon featuring 30 poems. It is dedicated to the Tibetan people and their exiled leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, in this 50th anniversary year of his forced flight to India.Last year her poem, "Survivor," was chosen by former U.S. Poet Laureate Mark Strand for inclusion in Best New Poets 2008.
Toadlily Press is an independent poetry press (in Chappaqua, New York, USA) committed to publishing and promoting poetry in perfect-bound volumes that juxtapose multiple voices in dialogue with one another and the reader. Each year, the press sponsors a poetry chapbook contest, The Quartet Series, through which four poets are chosen to be published in one full-length book. احتفلت الأستاذ المساعد - ديانا وودكوك - أستاذة اللغة الانجليزية بجامعة فرجينيا كومنولث قطر ، بصدور كتابها " Travels of a Gwai Lo" . تم تدشين الكتاب في حفل استقبال أقيم بمتحف الفنون Katonah بولاية نيويورك الأميركية .
وكتابها هو أحد أربعة كتب تم تضمينها في كتاب واحد " By Way of " والذي تمت طباعته ونشره من قبل دار النشر Toadlily .
والجدير بالذكر أن البروفيسور ديانا متعددة الأسفار حول العالم وهو ما نراه جليا ً في أعمالها، حيث نجدها مليئة بالتشويق والإثارة وتحكي بصدق عن تجربتها ومعايشتها لمختلف الأعراق، عملت ديانا لمدة سبعة أعوام ونصف في آسيا قامت خلالها بتدريس اللغة الانجليزية في إقليم التبت وماكاو بجنوبي الصين للاجئين على الحدود التايلاندية الكمبودية ، وقد انتقلت قبل خمس سنوات للعمل بجامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر.
ويحتوي كتابها " Travels of a Gwai Lo" على 14 قصيدة شعرية ، استوحت وحيها وإلهامها من الفترة التي قضتها متنقلة ما بين الصين وبورما وتايلند .
وقد قامت دار النشر " Toadlily " بطباعة ونشر كتاب " By Way of" يحوي أعمال أربع كتاب هم : الكاتبة ديانا الفازر من ولاية نورثهامبتون بولاية ماسشوستس الأميركية ، والكاتبة إميلي كار من ولاية كوينسي ، والكاتب ماثيو نينو من سياتل بولاية واشنطن الأميركية ، بالإضافة إلى الكاتبة ديانا وودكوك والمقيمة بالدوحة حاليا ً .
وقد أبدي الشاعر سيان نافين ملاحظاته على الكتاب قائلا ً " الشعر يجعلنا نشعر بالانسجام والتناغم ، مما يساعدنا في التعرف على أنفسنا ". تم تدشين الكتاب بحفل استقبال أقيم يوم الرابع من أكتوبر 2009 بمتحف Katonah ، وقد تحملت مؤسسة الشعراء والكتاب جزءا ً من تكاليف الحفل وتحمل مجلس الفنون بولاية نيويورك الجزء الباقي.

ولم تتمكن البروفيسور ديانا من حضور الحفل نظرا لانشغالها بمهامها في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر، إلا أنها عبرت عن فرحتها بصدور كتابها وتضمينه في كتاب " By the Way of " بقولها " ما زلت بانتظار استلام بعض النسخ من كتابي، وهو شعور غامر يصعب علي وصفه ". وأعربت عن أسفها لعدم حضور الحفل والاحتفاء مع الشعراء الثلاث الآخرين.
وللدكتور ديانا كتاب آخر سيرى النور قريبا ً " Mandala" بعد تولي دار النشر " Foothills " مهام طبعه. وقد قامت الدكتور ديانا بإهدائه لشعب التب وزعيمه الروحي المنفي من قبل 50 عاما ً إلى الهند، الدلاي لأما.
وقد اختار أمير الشعراء الأمريكي مارك ستراند قصيدتها " Survivor" كأحد أهم الأعمال ونشرها كأفضل القصائد وتضمينها في قائمة أفضل الشعر الجديد لعام 2008 .
