VCUQatar Announces Guest Designer Melanie McLintock At 'Hekayat' Fashion Show
Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar is pleased to announce New York- based fashion designer Melanie McLintock as the guest designer for the Tenth Annual Fashion Show which is open to the public on 30 April, 2009 at 7:00 PM.
Melanie McLintock's design work combines art with environmental consciousness. Whether it be a moralistic attitude to reduce and reuse or sheer economics, it always starts with necessity. The necessity presents itself and a good designer meets the need, she says. "I began using recycled umbrellas once I was educated on the profound effect their waste was having on the environment. Walking the streets of New York on a rainy day and seeing hundreds of broken, abandoned umbrellas screams of need. Something had to be done. People like pretty things. The trick is taking something that is once considered trash and making it a treasure."
Most of Ms. McLintock's designs are one-of-a-kind or very small production. She designs what she wants, when she wants and then takes them to shops for approval or puts them on her website, www.aiaigasa.com. "The collection I am showing at the Tenth Annual Fashion Show is really about art, education and pushing my limits."
Fashion design has been a calling since Ms. McLintock was eleven years old. She had a sketchbook full of designs, including several layouts of her dream shop. At that early age it was called "The Firmament" because she dreamed it was her little slice of Heaven. With her shop Ai Ai Gasa the dream was realized. The name directly translates from Japanese as "love love umbrella" but is actually a symbol of true love, an umbrella with two names written side by side beneath. At the time, the double meaning of the name had not fully materialized. "Only later when I started using recycled umbrellas religiously did the name bring on its double meaning," she says. The shop itself was in a warm, hip neighborhood in Brooklyn and featured the lines of independent NY designers.
Ms. McLintock is mostly inspired by her friends and fashion compatriots that she carried in her shop. Some of them are Feral Childe, umsteigen, Box 185, Sumie Tachibana, and Better Than Jam. "On a global and more recognizable level I think there is one really shining star and that is John Galliano. He never gives up the theater and I admire him for that," she adds.
Ms. McLintock graduated from VCU Richmond in 1996, with a BFA in Fashion Design. She then spent a year studying textiles and design in Northern Ireland at the University of Ulster. She is currently in Qatar as Assistant Professor of Fashion Design teaching a term at VCUQatar. "I have always hoped I would teach fashion design some day and especially give back to VCU for giving me such a great breath of knowledge. I felt it was important to get out there first and do something, so I could confidently say to my students, 'All is possible. Dream a big dream.' It didn't hurt that my favorite professors from VCU Richmond were here, the opportunity knocked, and I feel honored to be teaching alongside them," she concludes.
The fashion show is part of the annual activities of VCUQatar's fashion design program to develop the country's growing fashion industry, with support from Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. The theme for this year's show is entitled 'Hekayat' and comprises the stories the senior students weave together as they present their myriad collections. Doha is one of the most multi-cultured cities in the world and these influences are reflected in the show. The fashion show, hosted in the VCUQatar atrium, starts at 7:00 PM on 30 April, 2009 doors open at 6:00 PM and seating will be on a first come first seated basis.
جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر تعلن عن مشاركة المصمّمة الضيفة ميلاني ماكلينتوك في عرض "حكايات" للأزياء
يسرّ جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر أن تعلن عن مشاركة المصمّمة الضيفة ميلاني ماكلينتوك المقيمة في نيويورك في عرض الأزياء السنوي العاشر الذي يقام لعامة الجمهور يوم 30 أبريل 2009 عند الساعة 7:00 مساء.
تجمع المصمّمة ميلاني في تصاميمها الفن والوعي البيئي من منطلق اعتبارها بأنّ السلوكية الأخلاقية الراغبة سواء في التوفير الاقتصادي أو إعادة الاستخدام أو غيرها من الأسباب, فإنّ الأساس يبدأ بالحاجة في كل الأحوال. فالحاجة تمثل نفسها ويقوم المصمّم الجيد بتلبية هذه الحاجة. وفي هذا الصدد تقول المصممة: "لقد بدأت إعادة تدوير المظلات منذ أن عرفت بالتأثير الكبير والعميق الذي تتركه الفضلات على البيئة. فلا بد لمن يسير في شوارع نيويورك في يوم ممطر أن يرى مئات المظلات المكسورة والمرمية أرضا تبحث عمن يساعدها. ولذلك شعرت المصمّمة بضرورة القيام بعمل ما. ولكن كان لا بد اختيار شيء ما يعتبر من الفضلات وتحويلها إلى كنز."
تعدّ معظم تصاميم ماكلينتوك فريدة من نوعها أو إنتاجا قليلا جدا. وهي تصمّم كل ما تريده متى تريد ومن ثم تأخذها إلى المتاجر للحصول على الموافقة عليها او تعرضها على موقعها الإلكتروني www.aiaigasa.com. "تتمحور المجموعة التي أعرضها في عرض الأزياء السنوي العاشر حول الفن والتعليم ويوسع آفاقي."
رغبت السيدة ماكلينتوك في المشاركة في عرض للأزياء منذ كانت في سن الحادية عشرة. وقد كانت تحتفظ بدفتر للرسم ملىء بالرسومات بما فيها عدة تصاميم وأشكال للمتجر الذي كانت تحلم بافتتاحه. "عندما كنت في سن صغيرة, كنت أعطيه تسمية "السماء" لأنني كنت أحلم بقطعة صغيرة من الجنة. وقد حققت حلمها في متجر أي أي جاسا الذي يعني باللغة اليابانية "حب حب مظلة" ولكنها في الواقع رمزا للحب الحقيقي الذي جسدته بمظلة كتب على جانبيها اسمين. ولكن في ذاك الوقت, لم يكن قد تبلور تماما المعنى المزدوج للكلمة. "إلا أنه في وقت لاحق عندما بدأت أستخدم المظلات المعادة التدوير تبلور الإسم بمعناه المزدوج". وفتحت المصمّمة متجرها في بروكلين وعرضت فيه خطوط لمصممي نيويورك المستقلين.
تستقي ماكلينتوك الإلهام من أصدقائها وزملائها في مجال التصميم وتعرضها في متجرها. ومن هؤلاء المصمّمين نذكر فيرال تشيلد, وأومستايجين, بوكس 185, سومي تاشيبانا, وبيتير ذان جام. "وعلى المستوى العالم, أعتقد بوجود نجم صاعد وهو جون جاليانو الذي لا يستغني على المسرح وهذا ما يعجبني فيه."
تخرّجت ماكلينتوك من جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في ريتشموند سنة 1996 بعد حصولها على شهادة بكالوريوس في الفنون الجميلة في تصميم الأزياء. ومن ثم درست لمدة سنة الأقمشة والتصميم في إيرلندا الشمالية في جامعة أولستر. وتعمل حاليا في قطر أستاذا مساعدا لتصميم الأزياء لفترة فصل أكاديمي واحد في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر. "لطالما أملت أن أدرّس تصميم الأزياء يوما من الأيام وأردّ بعض من جميل جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث لتقديمها لي هذا القدر من المعرفة. وقد شعرت بأنه من الضروري القيام بأمر ما وإنجاز عمل يمكنني فيما بعد أن أقول لطلابي "كل شىء ممكن. لتكن أحلامكم كبيرة." وبالطبع استفدت من وجود أساتذة لي هنا في الجامعة وعندما أتتني الفرصة المناسبة شعرت بالفخر أن أدرّس إلى جانبهم."
يشكل عرض الأزياء السنوي العاشر الذي تقيمه جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر جزءا من الأنشطة السنوية التي تنظمها الجامعة من أجل المساهمة في تعزيز قطاع الأزياء المتنامي في قطر بدعم من مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع. ويندرج عرض أزياء هذه السنة تحت عنوان حكايات ويتضمن قصصا ينسجها طلاب السنة الأخيرة سويا لتشكيل مجموعة متنوعة. وتعتبر الدوحة من مدن العالم الأكثر تعددية من حيث الثقافات ولذلك لا بد أن تظهر هذه التأثيرات في عرض الأزياء. يبدأ العرض المفتوح لعامة الجمهور عند الساعة 7:00 مساء يوم 30 أبريل 2009 وتفتح الأبواب عند الساعة 6:00 مساء علما بأن اختيار المقاعد حسب الأسبقية في الوصول.
