Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar Offers Honors Program
Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar hosted Kelly Shircliff, the coordinator of academic affairs at the Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Ms. Shircliff is visiting the Doha campus of Virginia Commonwealth University to assist in development of the Honors program on the Qatar campus. There are currently thirty-one students registered in the honors program at VCUQatar and seven are working toward graduation with honors in the spring of 2009.
Asked about her visit and interactions with students at VCUQatar Kelly responded, "We have been educating students on the importance of the dossier requirement for the Honors program. The students at VCUQatar are very motivated and exceptional in wanting to achieve honors. They are very driven and talented. I find strong motivation here because the students want to be worthy of university honors. "
The VCUQatar Honors program is designed to foster an atmosphere of innovative exploration and to provide a challenge for some of the exceptional students at VCUQatar. Students in the honors program complete 18 semester hours of honors classes in both the core curriculum subjects and in their major areas of study. This curricular challenge is extended by seminars and the opportunity to be part of a lively honors community.
VCUQatar English professor Patty Gibbons is herself a graduate of the VCU Honors program. Professor Gibbons is currently advising one of the honors students and is making time in her schedule to meet with others because as she states, "I'd like to help support the honors program in any way I can".
"We are pleased to have Ms. Shircliff at VCUQatar this week to meet with our students and faculty about the Honors program requirements. We want the students on the Qatar campus to have the opportunity to pursue the Honors distinction, "declared Dr. Charles Bleick, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

استضافت جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر كيلي شيركليف منسقة الشؤون الأكاديمية في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في ريتشموند بالولايات المتحدة الأميركية. وتزور السيدة شيركليف الفرع الجامعي في الدوحة بغية المساعدة في تأسيس برنامج درجة الشرف والجدير بالذكر بأن واحد وثلاثين طالب مسجلين حاليا في برنامج درجة الشرف في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر ويسعى سبعة للتخرج بدرجة الشرف في ربيع سنة 2009.
وعند سؤالها عن زيارتها وتفاعلها مع الطلاب في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث, قالت "لقد كنا نعلّم الطلاب أهمية تحصيل درجة الشرف في الجامعة. وقد لاحظت مدى حماسة الطلاب ورغبتهم في تحقيق هذا المستوى العالي كما أنهم موهوبين وشديدي الحماس وأعتبرهم جميعا جديرين بتحقيق درجة الشرف في الجامعة."
تم تصميم برنامج درجة الشرف في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث بغية توفير بيئة من الاستكشاف الإبداعي وحفز روح التحدي لدى بعض من الطلاب المتفوقين في الجامعة. وللحصول على هذه الدرجة, يتعين على الطالب إتمام 18 ساعة فصليا في مقررات الشرف التي تشمل المقررات الرئيسة في المنهاج الأكاديمي وفي مجالات دراساتهم الأساسية, كما يجب عليهم حضور الندوات والمشاركة بفعالية في مجتمع درجة الشرف."
تخرجت أستاذة اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر باتي جيبسون من برنامج الشرف في الجامعة الأم وتقوم حاليا بتقديم الاستشارة والنصح لأحد الطلاب في برنامج درجة الشرف وتبرمج وقتها من أجل مقابلة طلاب آخرين لأنها "تود المساعدة في دعم برنامج درجة الشرف بأي طريقة ممكنة".
"يسرنا أن تنضم السيدة شيركليف إلينا في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر هذا الاسبوع لمقابلة الطلاب والاساتذة وتتحدث معهم بشأن متطلبات برنامج درجة الشرف", حسب قول الدكتور تشارلز بلايك العميد المشارك للشؤون الأكاديمية الذي تابع "نود أن يحصل الطلاب في الفرع الجامعي في قطر على فرصة تحقيق درجة الشرف."
