Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar Hosts Photographer Chris Jordan
Doha, Qatar- Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar presents Chris Jordan's presentation entitled Running the Numbers: Portraits of Mass Consumption as part of the Image, Word and Voice speaker series at VCUQatar. The public event will be hosted in the VCUQatar atrium on November 10th at 7:00PM. No reservations are required and all are welcome.
Chris Jordan is the Seattle-based photographic artist who first became known for his large scale color photographs of the American consumer culture, in a series entitled Intolerable Beauty: Portraits of American Mass Consumption. His recent project, Running the Numbers has established Chris as an internationally acclaimed artist and spokesperson for social change.
When Running the Numbers was first released, it quickly went viral on the Net and since then Chris's website has averaged 75,000-100,000 visitors per month. Chris's work recently won the prestigious Green Leaf Award from the United Nations Environmental Program, presented at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway and this year his Running the Numbers series was one of three finalists for the international Darmstadt Photographic Prize in Germany, and was a finalist for the new Green Prix Award in the United States. "We are excited to bring talented artists to Qatar for the Image, Word and Voice lecture series. Chris' presentation will have something for everyone in the audience to connect with," stated Byrad Yyelland, Director of General Education.
Chris's images have been featured in virtually every form of print and electronic medium and he has been invited to exhibit his work in the U.S., Asia, Europe and South America and now, the Middle East. Chris is a popular and charismatic presenter who was recently chosen by National Geographic Channels International to serve as their Eco-ambassador for Earth Day, 2008.
Chris Jordan will be in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in November to participate in the World Economic Forum summit and he is coming to VCUQatar on November 10 at 7:00PM for the Image, Word & Voice visiting speaker series sponsored by the General Education program. The Image, Word & Voice series is sponsored by the Department of General Education and is designed to bring world-class experts and artists to VCUQatar to share their ideas, work and expertise. This enables our students, and members of the local community, to meet with and learn from individuals who are on the cutting edge of their areas of expertise.

الدوحة - قطر. تقدم جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر عرضا للفنان كريس جوردان بعنوان "إجراء الحسابات: رسومات للاستهلاك الجماعي" الذي يندرج ضمن سلسلة عروض الصورة والكلمة والصوت التي تقدمها الجامعة. وتقام هذه الفعالية العامة في البهو الرئيسي لجامعة فرجينيا كومنولث بتاريخ 10 نوفمبر عند الساعة 7 مساء. الدعوة مفتوحة ولا ضرورة لإجراء أي حجز.
كريس جوردان مصوّر يتخذ من مدينة سياتل مقرا له وقد ذاع صيته بفضل صوره الفوتوجرافية الملونة الضخمة المتمحورة حول ثقافة الإستهلاك الأميركية وتندرج ضمن سلسلة تحمل تسمية "الجمال المفرط: رسومات للاستهلاك الجماعي". حقق مشروعه الأخير "إجراء الحسابات" نجاحا عارما جعله متحدثا في العديد من المحافل التي يدعو فيها إلى إحداث تغيير اجتماعي.
والجدير بالذكر بأن صور "إجراء الحسابات" تم تداولها على الإنترنت بسرعة البرق فور إصدارها للمرة الأولى إلى حد جعل عدد الزوار للموقع الإلكتروني لكريس يصل إلى ما بين 75 ألف و100 الف زائر في الشهر. منح كريس مؤخرا جائزة الورقة الخضراء المرموقة من برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة في حفل أقيم في مركز نوبل للسلام في أوسلو بالنرويج وقد كانت سلسلة إجراء الحسابات من بين المرشحين النهائيين الثلاثة لجائزة التصوير الفوتوجرافي الدولية في ألمانيا كما كانت بين المرشحين النهائيين للجائزة الخضراء الجديدة في الولايات المتحدة. وعن زيارة كريس لجامعة فرجينيا كومنولث, قال مدير التعليم العام بيراد ييلاند: "إننا شديدو السعادة بإمكانية استضافة فنانين موهوبين إلى قطر للمشاركة في سلسلة محاضرات الصورة والكلمة والصوت. وإننا على ثقة بأن العرض الذي سيقدمه كريس سيعطي كل واحد من أفراد الجمهور فرصة لإدراك مقاصده الفنية."
ظهرت الصور التي التقطها كريس بأشكال رقمية ومطبوعة وقد وجّهت له دعوات لعرض أعماله في الولايات المتحدة وآسيا وأوروبا وأميركا الجنوبية واليوم في الشرق الأوسط.وتقديرا لموهبته الفذة في تقديم العروض, قامت القنوات الجغرافية الوطنية باختياره مؤخرا لمنصب السفير البيئي ليوم البيئة لسنة 2008.
يجول كريس جوردان في دبي بالإمارات العربية المتحدة في نوفمبر حيث يشارك في قمة منتدى الاقتصادي العالمي ويصل إلى قطر في 10 نوفمبر عند الساعة 7 مساء للمشاركة كمتحدث زائر في سلسلة صورة وكلمة وصوت التي يرعاها برنامج التعليم العام. جاءت فكرة هذه السلسة بغية دعوة خبراء وفنانين عالميين مرموقين إلى جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث للتعريف بأفكارهم وأعمالهم وخبراتهم.تتيح هذه السلسلة للطلاب وأعضاء المجتمع المحلي مقابلة الفنانين الذين يحققون نجاحات وإبداعات في مجالات تخصصاتهم
