Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar Hosts Generations Exhibit
Doha, Qatar- Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar opened the Generations exhibit to a standing room only audience. The attendees listened to a lecture by Yumiko Mizutani on Wednesday evening in a hall filled to capacity. "The audience turnout was outstanding for this exhibit and we are very pleased by the number of people interested in Japanese art and the Kimono," stated Moamer Qazafi Director of Marketing and Public Relations for VCUQatar. On October 16 at 10:00AM the public is invited to a Kimono painting workshop to experience the Kimono creation process by authentic Kimono artist Sosaku Manabe.
The audience was treated to a detailed explanation of the changes in Kimono design over the centuries and a fashion show after the lecture.
The Kimono, the national costume of Japan, was first developed over seven hundred years ago during the Heian Period. In modern times, however, the Kimono has become a garment that is no longer used in everyday life, but marks special occasions end events in a person's life that warrant an element of tradition, such as the Tea Ceremony, the New Year, the Coming-of-Age Day, Graduation, Wedding, or Funeral. Kimonos have traditionally been highly prized garments, hand-made of the finest materials, and handed down from one generation to the next. The exhibition "Generations - Tradition and Continuity in Kimonos from Japan", curated by Sandra Wilkins, Chairperson for the Department of Fashion Design at VCUQatar, explores this aspect of Japanese Kimono culture by showing examples from a private Japanese collection that were assembled over several generations. Furthermore the exhibition features a spectacular collection of kimonos by the artist Sosaku Manabe, a national living treasure in Japan, who works in painting on silk. In addition the exhibition also showcases the materials and techniques of manufacture of different types of Kimonos and assesses the resurgence of the Kimono in the youth culture of contemporary Japan.
"The Gallery's exhibit is designed to educate the audience about everything related to Kimonos; from how fabric is woven to the choice of colors. What makes Kimonos so highly prized is the art that goes into producing them. Japanese Kimono artists are Artists of amazing talent. Kimonos are often passed on from one generation to the next and in this exhibit we explore this tradition. Kimonos represent more than something worn; each Kimono is a living piece of art," explained Sandra Wilkins.
The opening lecture and history was provided by Prof. Yumiko Mizutani. Professor Mizutani is a professor at Graduate School of Intercultural Studies at Yamaguchi Prefectural University (YPU). Fashion Design and Aesthetic of Fashion are her majors. After completion of Master's course in Home Economics at Ochanomizu University, Tokyo, she taught in Seian College of Art and Design, Kyoto as an assistant professor, and is teaching now at YPU. She published "History of Fashion" as a co-author and "Dramatic Space by Tomio Mohri - Stage, Fashion and Art."
She works for regional collaboration through product design and fashion shows based on regional history and culture. Since 2000 she has organized and managed "Japan Fashion Design Contest in Yamaguchi" which focuses on Denim to popularize Denim fashion in and out of Japan. She researches Kimonos by focusing on the idea of "Japonism" and sustainability.
The Kimono artist Sosaku Manabe will conduct a public workshop in the VCUQatar Atrium on the manufacture of Kimonos on Thursday morning at 10:00AM. Mr. Manabe was born in 1956 and became interested in the world of drawing at an early age. Significantly influenced by his father who was a skilled painter, he grew up, listening to the sound of weaving in his aunt's house in Nishijin, Kyoto. He decided to learn Kyo-Yuzen hand-drawing under the artist Taro Ryoku in 1981, which gave him an extraordinary sense of color. After his apprenticeship in 1983, he extended his experience under the Japanese painting artist Koen Hakamada. By using his skill and sense of color he produces one of a kind products. His work "Henka (Change)" was awarded "Prize of Kyoto City Mayor" in May 1998. The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry awarded him the title of "Traditional Industrial Artist" for Kyo-Yuzen hand drawing. Mr. Manabe states, "My motto is to produce Kimonos which people enjoy watching and are pleased to wear."

Mr. Yukio Kitazume, The Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar and his wife Mrs. Hiroko Kitazume for lending their personal heirlooms from their private collection, as well as providing logistical support in inviting distinguished speakers from Japan. The exhibition concept was developed as part of the Exhibition and Environmental Design independent study by students Lydia Assad, Zeinab Khalil and Ghalya Al Thani with instructor Pornprapha Phatanateacha. Exhibit was produced with contributions from Pornprapha Phatanateacha and Levi Hammett from the Department of Graphic Design and Maja Kinnemark from the Department of Interior Design.

جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر تستضيف معرضها " أجيال - التقليد والاستمرارية في أزياء الكيمونو اليابانية"
الدوحة - قطر : قامت جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطرمؤخرا بافتتاح معرضها "أجيال - التقليد والاستمرارية في أزياء الكيمونو اليابانية" . وقد استمع الحضور يوم الافتتاح لمحاضرة ألقاها الأستاذ المشارك يوميكو ميزوتاني. " وقد صرح السيد/ معمر القذافي - مدير التسويق والعلاقات العامة في الجامعة بقوله " قام بحضور افتتاح المعرض عدد غير متوقع من الحضور، ولقد كنا فعلا مسرورين بالإقبال الشديد من الجمهور والمهتمين بالفن الياباني عامة وبفن الكيمونو خاصة". في تمام الساعة العاشرة من يوم الخميس الموافق 16 أكتوبر 2008 تم توجيه دعوة عامة لحضور ورشة عمل لكيفية صناعة الكيمونو بإشراف الفنان الياباني سوساكو منابي.
ولقد استمع الجمهور إلى شرحا مفصلا عن التغييرات التي صاحبت صناعة وأزياء الكيمونو على مر القرون. وقد قام الجمهور بحضور عرضا للأزياء بعد ذلك.
تم تطوير الزي التقليدي الياباني (الكيمونو) لأول مرة قبل سبعمائة عام وخلال العهد الهياني. وفي العهد الحديث ، ومع أن الكيمونو أصبح من الملابس التي لم تعد تستخدم في الحياة اليومية، فقد أصبح الكيمونو هو أحد التقاليد التي تميز المناسبات الخاصة في حياة الفرد مثل حفل الشاي ، عيد رأس السنة ، الاحتفال بيوم البلوغ ، حفل التخرج ، حفل الزواج أو في المناسبات الحزينة مثل حضور مراسم الجنازة. ولقد أصبح للكيمونو قيمة مرتفعة وقيمة بين الملابس الجاهزة ، فهو يصنع من أجود المواد المصنعة يدويا ويتم توارثه من جيل لآخر.
تم تنسيق معرض الكيمونو "التقليد والاستمرارية في أزياء الكيمونو اليابانية" بإشراف السيدة/ ساندرا ويلكنز أستاذ مشارك ، رئيس قسم تصميم الأزياء والتسويق. ويهدف هذا المعرض إلى إلقاء الضوء على جانب من جوانب الثقافة اليابانية من خلال إظهار أمثلة لمجموعة من القطع اليابانية الخاصة والتي تم جمعها و توارثها عبر الأجيال كما أنه يشكل عودة للكيمونو في ثقافة الشباب المعاصر من اليابان. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن المعرض يتضمن عرض للعديد من أزياء الكيمونو التي تم تصميمها من قبل الفنان الياباني ساساكو منابي والذي يعد ثروة وطنية حية في اليابان والذي يعمل في مجال الرسم على الحرير. كما يعرض المعرض المواد والتقنيات التي تستخدم في صناعة الأنواع والموديلات المختلفة من الكيمونو .
ولقد صرحت السيدة/ ساندرا بقولها " تم تصميم المعرض بحيث يعمل على تعريف الجمهور بكل ما يتعلق بأزياء الكيمونو بداية من كيفية نسج النسيج وحتى اختيار الألوان. إن ما يجعل للكيمونو قيمة مرتفعة هو كونه قطعة فنية. إن فنانين الكيمونو هم من الفنانين اليابانيين المدهشين ذوي الموهبة المميزة. إن الكيمونو هو قطعة فنية تتوارثها الأجيال ونحن في هذا المعرض نستكشف هذا التقليد، فالكيمونو ليس عبارة عن قطعة بالية أو مستهلكه، إن كل كيمونو هو عبارة عن قطعة فنية حية.
تم إلقاء المحاضرة يوم الافتتاح من قبل الأستاذ المشارك السيدة/ يوميكو ميزوتاني و هي أستاذ في كلية الدراسات العليا للدراسات والثقافات في جامعة المحافظات ياماغوتشي وتخصصها هو تصميم الأزياء وإظهار جمال الأزياء. بعد الانتهاء من دورة الماجستير في الاقتصاد المنزلي من جامعة أوتشانوميزو - طوكيو ، عملت كأستاذ مساعد في كلية سيان للفنون والتصميم ، كيوتو. وهي الآن تدرس في جامعة ياماغوتشي (YPU). قامت السيدة/ ميزوتاني بالمشاركة في تأليف ونشر "تاريخ الموضة" و "الفضاء المثير بين الموضة والفن". علما بأنها تعمل أيضا من أجل التعاون الأقليمي من خلال تصميم المنتجات وعروض الأزياء بالارتكاز على التاريخ الإقليمي والثقافة. وفي عام 2000 قامت السيدة/ ميزوتاني بتنظيم وإدارة "مسابقة تصميم الأزياء اليابانية في ياماغوتشي" حيث كانت تركز المسابقة على استخدام الأقمشة القطنية المتينة في تصميم الأزياء وذلك بهدف تعميم استخدام الأزياء القطنية في داخل وخارج اليابان. كما قامت بإجراء العديد من الأبحاث عن الكيمونو وذلك بالتركيز على فكرة "الجابونزم" والتي تعبر عن البقاء والاستمرارية.
وقد قام الفنان الياباني سوساكو منابي بإدارة ورشة عمل عن كيفية صناعة الكيمونو . ولد الفنان منابي عام 1956 ولقد ظهر اهتمامه في عالم الفن والرسم في سن مبكرة متأثرا تأثرا كبيرا بوالده الذي كان رساما ماهرا. نشأ السيد منابي وترعرع وهو يستمع إلى صوت النسيج في بيت عمته في "نيشيجن - كيوتو" وقد قرر أن يتعلم الرسم اليدوي "كيويوزن" تحت يد الفنان تارو يروكو عام 1981 مما منحه شعورا غير عاديا بالألوان. وبعد هذه التلمذة الصناعية وفي عام 1983 قام بمد خبرته تحت إشراف الفنان الياباني كيون هاكاماد وهو يعمل حاليا على إنتاج منتجاته الخاصة والتي تنسجم مع روحه الفريد وأفكاره.
باستخدام مهاراته البارزة وحسه المميز والجديد الألوان قام بإنتاج أحد أفضل المنتجات. ففي مايو من عام 1998 تم منحه جائزة من عمدة مدينة كيوتو على عمله المميز والذي أطلق عليه اسم "حنكة "التغير" . وقام وزير الاقتصاد والتجارة والصناعة بمنحه لقب "فنان الصناعات التقليدية" وذلك عن رسوماته اليدوية كيويوزن.
ولقد صرح السيد/ منابي يقوله " إن شعاري هو انتاج أزياء الكيمونو التي يتمتع الناس بمجرد النظر إليها ويستمتعون ويفرحون لارتدائها. إنني ساستمر بإنتاج أزياء الكيمونو من أعماق قلبي".

لقد تم تطوير مفهوم هذا المعرض كجزء من معرض التصميم البيئي ودراسة مستقلة من قبل الطالبات : ليديا أسعد وزينب خليل وغالية آل ثاني بإشراف وتوجيه بورنبراها فاتنتيش. أما منتجات المعرض فكانت مساهمات من قبل كل من بورنبراها فاتنتيش وليفي هامت من قسم تصميم الغرافيك وماجا كيني مارك من قسم التصميم الداخلي.
سيستمر هذا المعرض خلال الفترة من 15 أكتوبر 2008 وحتى 15 نوفمبر 2008. ويفتح المعرض أبوابه للجمهور خلال الأيام من الأحد حتى الخميس من الساعة العاشرة صباحا وحتى الساعة الخامسة مساء.
