Ras Gas Award

Interior Design students Esra Kazem and Samreen Zahra won the RasGas Internship Summer Star award for the best internship presentation.

Ezra and Samreen competed against an initial field of 20 interns and were selected to go on to compete in the finals against four other Education City students from Qatar.

The girls completed a design solution for a canteen renovation in Ras Laffan. The presentation clearly showed their design solution with concept images, diagrams of circulation studies, statements explaining color choices, their psychological implications and many hand-drawn and digitally generated perspectives and plans. The presentation was concluded with a complete digital walkthrough complemented by music especially chosen for the concept.

Dean Allyson Vanstone and her husband attended the presentation; they were enlightened to learn what RasGas interns did during their internships.

"I am very proud of Ezra and Samreen's outstanding performance in their summer internship at RasGas. They were confident and articulate during their presentation to a panel of RasGas executives and a full room of observers. Their project expressed professional design abilities with full consideration of the needs of the users. It was clear that RasGas will enjoy the design of their new cafeteria." said VCUQ Dean Allyson Vanstone.

"These presentations allowed our students to demonstrate the complex issues involved in making design decisions. Working under VCUQ alumna, Hanouf Al Thani, the students followed the design process and applied their technical knowledge to produce an interior solution. They demonstrated the value of interior design and the high quality of a VCUQ education. RasGas provided an exciting venue for the variety of presentation styles and topics. The complex issues used in solving interior design problems complemented the engineering topics." added Ruth Beals, Chair of Interior Design VCUQ.
