VCUQ recently held a Summer Arts Workshop. The program was designed for rising senior high school students to explore their passion for the arts through a variety of different classes and media.
"Basically it was a summer camp which was fun but also enriching. This intensive experience helped the seniors prepare for TOEFL and their portfolios which is an important part of the application process for VCUQ." said Valerie Jeremijenko, VCUQ Assistant Dean for Students Affairs.
The week long workshop included experiences in ceramics, woodwork, painting, drawing and printmaking. It also included two hours of English classes a day as well as preparation for the TOEFL test.
"The workshop was a great opportunity for students to see the VCUQ standards and to learn what would be expected of them as students. It was the first time that many of them were exposed to drawing, painting and jewelry making. Participants also learnt to appreciate the sketch book and the importance of the process and various stages of design versus just the final product." noted Michelle Johnson, Instructor.
"I was overwhelmed with the level of enthusiasm expressed by the students and there was so much positive energy in the classrooms" added John Fuller, Instructor.
"I thoroughly enjoyed this week. I learnt many things for the first time in this workshop, for example I have never used a sewing machine before, but in the fashion class I had the opportunity to practice using one. All the instructors were very patient and clam with us, as most of us were learning things for the first time" commented one enthusiastic student.
