Graphic Design Students will be presented the results of a workshop that they attended on a field trip to Thailand,
Professors Pornprapha Phatanateacha and Peter Martin recently developed a six-day itinerary for 15 VCUQ graphic design students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) with which to immerse themselves in an unfamiliar environment and develop insight into the context of the culture and everyday living. The destination chosen to do this was Bangkok, Thailand. Activities involved traveling around Bangkok visiting cultural sites, markets, design schools, design offices and some sites outside the city.
The final day of this field study consisted of a workshop exchange between VCUQ students and Thai design students from Silpakorn University that was hosted by the Thailand Creative Design Centre (TCDC).
The 15 students were led by Pornprapha Phatanateacha, Muneera Spence, Sherry Blankenship and Halim Choueiry.
VCUQ instructor Pornprapha Phatanateacha spearheaded the logistical organization of the field study trip while Graphic Design Department Assistant, Fatima Al Darwish, provided support in the coordination and arrangements prior to departure.
"Learning about the nature of culture and everyday living can be difficult if confined to a structured classroom within the familiarity of your home city. Imagine what we can learn about the textures, rhythms, languages and dynamics of a place if we are to travel to an unfamiliar place and explore what is there. These lessons will help us understand our own familiar place with new powers of observation gained." said VCUQ Assistant Professor Peter Martin.
