The VCUQ Gallery presents The Bauhaus Interior: Idea, Reality, Utopia Exhibition, from February 7-March 13, 2007.
The exhibition is curated by the art historians Dr. Jochen Sokoly and Karin Adrian von Roque in cooperation with the Bauhaus-Archive, Berlin and the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein. It considers how furniture and accessories produced in the various Bauhaus workshops formed the constituent elements of the actual interiors of Bauhaus masters, their designs and the utopia of modern living that still resonate to this day. The exhibition also traces and juxtaposes the various visions of design and teaching of the Bauhaus directors Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Due to the generosity of the Bauhaus-Archive, Berlin and the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein it has been possible for the first time in the Middle East to stage an exhibition that brings together vintage furniture, original objects, drawings and photographs of some of the most famous Bauhaus designers and craftsmen which illustrate their idea of a new way of life.
"This exhibition is a milestone in the Middle East, because of both its theme and content. We hope that it will inspire a new generation of designers in this region, both as professionals but also as future teachers and founders of new schools of design." noted Dr. Sokoly.
As perhaps the most influential German art and design school of the 20th century, the Bauhaus propagated a new way of living in its years of operation between 1919-1933, which has permeated with the idea of simplicity and functionality of design.
