Robert Bringhurst

VCUQ recently hosted a public lecture by designer Robert Bringhurst. Mr. Bringhurst is a quintessential writer on the topic of Typography and a much respected writer, poet, professor and lecturer.

An American-born poet, Bringhurst is also a book designer, typographer, historian and linguist. His 1992 book The Elements of Typographic Style became an instant classic. In 1993 he delivered the American Printing History Association's Lieberman Lecture at UCLA; in 1997, the University of Lowa's Annual Brownell Lecture on the History of the Book; in 1998 the Georg Svensson Lecture at the Royal Library, Stockholm and in 2001, the culminating lecture of the San Francisco Zapfest.

Bringhurst's seminal book The Elements of Typographic Style is now in its third edition, it influences the way innumerable practitioners, both students and experienced professionals think about that craft. As he is much-lauded poet and a translator of indigenous literature from the people of the Northwest Coast of North America it is not surprising that he thinks about hands-on subjects like type in ways that include its many concentric rings of context and meaning.

"Robert Bringhurst is an amazing designer; we use his book Elements of Typography to teach our students here at VCUQ. As he is a poet, the nature of his book is written in an easy flowing style. This lecture is a wonderful opportunity for the public to get an insight into typography" said Halim Choueiry VCUQ Assistant Professor for Graphic Design.
