Fashion Internship

Fashion Design students have recently returned from New York where they completed a four week internship with the hip hop urban retailer Akademiks.

Every year the VCUQ fashion Design program gives its rising seniors and juniors the opportunity to gain practical experience in the work place. In the past, internships have been carried out in Europe and America as well as places closer to home such as Beirut and Abu Dhabi.

This year Latifa Al Medaihki and Madeline McGehee spent their summer in New York working for Akademiks an urban clothing company. They worked with Head Designer Don Juan Harrell. The main focus of their internship was the marketing strategies employed by the company. Latifa worked mainly in women's wear and Madeline worked in production and promotion.

"One of my assignments was to help come up with inspiration for the new women's line. The theme was Brazil, so I researched images of the carnival and wildlife in Brazil. Overall the experience was amazing, I got to work with brilliant designers on a daily basis." said Latifa.

Latifah was extremely happy working with the denim clothing company as this is her favorite type of clothing and something that she hopes to do in the future.

"In order to graduate, a Fashion Student must have at least forty hours of internship experience. My hope is for the girls to realize just how important the internship process is. As Qatar grows, the fashion industry in the country grows with it making it easier for girls to get internships within the country." said Sandra Wilkins, VCUQ Fashion Design Department Chairperson.
