Typefaces Designed by VCUQ Students Now Available

Doha, Qatar - The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQ) Graphic Design Students have designed typefaces which are now available commercially in a specially-packaged CD from Layout Middle East, Ltd.

VCUQ students' fonts were selected as a result of an Arabic Font Design Contest, sponsored last year by Layout, a global leader of publishing workflow solutions.

"Our goal was to give senior students in graphic design hands-on experience creating for the commercial world, while encouraging greater appreciation for the richness of their native Arabic language," explained Joe Abi Raad, Assistant General Manager of Layout Ltd.

Lubna Al-Essa said that the inspiration for her design was the burn scar that has been on her hand since she was six years old. Using a copying machine, Al-Essa first copied her scar and then enlarged it. She then used the image to serve as a basis for the texture and grid for her design. "I wanted it to be personal to me, something with a story behind it." said Al Essa of her design.

The typefaces of nine VCUQ design students appear on the "VCUQ Collection."
The "VCUQ Collection" CD is available through Layout Ltd resellers around the world and can also be ordered by contacting sales@layoutltd.com or visiting www.layoutltd.com

The 'VCUQ Collection 2005' also features the font designs of: Mary Anne Skill, Ghaya Jassim, Moza Al-Shamali, Khawla Al-Kuwari, Aisha Al-Suwaidi, Aysha Al-Jaber; Hend Zainal and Mayssaa Salha.

Layout's publishing workflow solutions and font collections are used by major publishers including newspapers, magazines and pre-press houses and communications professionals such as advertising agencies and graphic designers.
