Information Technology
The Information Technology staff recently completed several major projects. The Atrium Project created a large venue (450+ seats) state-of-the-art video and audio system that is now available by reservation. The Web Site Redesign Project created a newly designed VCUQ web site hosted in Qatar. And perhaps the most significant project recently completed was the VCUQ Domain Transition Project that involved accepting responsibility for the VCUQ network infrastructure and servers which were formerly provided by Qatar Foundation.
The VCUQ Atrium is simply impressive. With 16 separate 50" displays creating an large wall of video and 7 supplemental video displays installed throughout the room, there are many possibilities for viewing informational video. Additionally, there are 8 satellite receivers installed so that multiple channels of TV can be viewed simultaneously. The entire facility is capable of recording (to DVD or VHS) and broadcasting events to any site on the Internet using videoconferencing technologies. When not in use for presentations and events the video system is available as an information kiosk. The atrium is available for reservation by contacting Margarita Zuniga (mzuniga@qatar.vcu.edu).
The VCUQ Domain Transition resulted in the following improvements to services:
- Increased quotas for online storage of email (from 100MB to 2GB).
- A new login page for web-based access to email that reflects the VCUQ identity (coming soon).
- Resource scheduling for all VCUQ classrooms and events (coming soon).
- Direct management of groups, users, and account information.
- Enhanced security of electronic communications (coming soon).
- Increased attachment sizes for email (2MB to 25MB).
We are hopeful that other improvements such as increased bandwidth and faster access to online resources will also result from this transition.
