Design

What design means to us

At VCUQatar we believe design is a catalyst promoting not only innovation, but also preservation and harmony within a society. The thoughtful and skilled design of environments, communications, clothing, identities, products, interactions and systems has enormous potential to bridge the gap between tradition and modernization. Design is a reflection of the ageless cycle that defines and renews culture and traditions

Our building's architecture reflects the blending of the traditional and timeless with the modern and functional.  At the University our students learn to combine their Islamic heritage and culture with standard methods and design practices used in the United States.

Richard Toscan, Dean of VCU School of the Arts, Richmond, VA notes, "We make an enormous effort to explore the meaning of design in the Arab world which was so vital centuries ago and then lost, or whose splendor was so absorbed by the culture of daily life that it could no longer be recognized as design. Our school greatly stresses the honoring of Arab influences in design and making them visible, so that traditional styles can be better embraced and better adapted to our present-day requirements and needs"

VCUQatar's commitment to design education and integration in society is the prevailing motivation for hosting our Annual Tasmeem Design Conference.
