VCUQatar presents its 2008 Arts and Architecture of the Islamic World Lecture Series

Venetia Porter is curator at the Middle East Department of The British Museum in London where she works on the Islamic Art of the Arab World and Turkey as well as the collection of the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East.

VCUQatar will host a lecture by Venetia Porter as part of the Arts and Architecture of the Islamic World Lecture Series. The lecture will take place in the VCUQatar Atrium on Sunday, 3 February 2008, 7:30 pm.

Venetia Porter is curator at the Middle East Department of The British Museum in London where she works on the Islamic Art of the Arab World and Turkey as well as the collection of the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East.

In 2006 she curated the exhibition Word into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East, and the British Museum which opens in Dubai this month.

Dr. Porter's lecture will discuss the responses to the exhibition by the public when it was shown in London and through the themes of the exhibition will examine the powerful and innovative ways that artists from across the Middle East are using script today.

Based largely on the collection of the British Museum, all the works in the exhibition contain words, allusions to words, scripts and symbols. One main message underpins the theme of the exhibition: Read these words, and look at what artists are saying through these works, about their culture, their calligraphic and literary traditions and the troubled world that is the Middle East today. Word into Art will be shown in an expanded version in the atrium of the Dubai International Financial Centre from February 7 - April 30.

"The Venetia Porter exhibition at the Dubai International Financial Centre is a milestone for the arts and cultural scene in the Gulf and the Arab World, its focuses on the work of contemporary artists from the Arab world and enables the public to take part in the cultural discourse that is happening" said Dr Jochen Sokoly VCUQatar Gallery Director and Assistant Professor in Art History.
