VCUQatar Invites High School Students to Design for Better Living

The Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar invites secondary school students from Oman to design solutions for the problems they face and to create products that could be made better to help the lives of people in their community.

“Everyday we face challenges, which if given some effort and creative thinking can be overcome by well designed solutions.  We invite senior secondary school students to respond to the problems faced by people they know by designing better products or systems.  Omani students have submitted outstanding competition entries in the past and we look forward to receiving imaginative solutions from Oman again this year,” Dr. Charles Bleick, VCUQatar Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Based on this year’s theme of Better Living through Better Design students in the competition have a chance to express their ideas for problems they see in their environment.  Along with a chance to win cash prizes ranging from $1000 for first place to $200 for fifth place, two qualified students from the region can be awarded full four-year Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity to study design at VCUQatar.

“Design is about inspiring people with creative ideas and meaningful solutions.  Bringing better living to our neighborhoods by designing better products or solutions is what we are looking for from Omani students.  We want them to design something that will make life better for people of their city,” explained Can Ikram, VCUQatar Director of Admissions.

The deadline to submit the entry online is January 8, 2009. To obtain detailed rules interested students may visit the Design Competition Sheikha Mozah Scholarship section of the website at www.qatar.vcu.edu or email VCUQADMISSIONS@qatar.vcu.edu or call +974 492 7238 for more information.
