VCUQatar Awards Two Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity

For the first time in the history of the scholarship,Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar awarded the two Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity to two students from Qatar and both from the same school - Al Khor International School. Both students were among the 40 winners of the 2010 VCUQatars Design Competition.

VCUQatar’s Director of Admissions Can Ikram and Director of Marketing and Public Relations Moamer Qazafi presented the scholarships to the two winners, Marianne Bermejo and Natasha Bahri, at Al Khor International School. The awards ceremony was preceded by a presentation of the winners’ portfolios, prepared for VCUQatar’s admissions, shown to about 75 students from Al Khor International School (British Stream).

Mr. Qazafi began by congratulating Al Khor International School (British Stream) “as this is the first time VCUQatar is awarding both the scholarships to students from the same school.” He continued with introducing VCUQatar and its programs to the students, speaking about the role designers play in shaping the future of their communities and the world. Mr. Ikram spoke to the students about VCUQatar’s admissions procedures and holistic approach to education. He concluded by congratulating the school and the students for winning the scholarships while encouraging the students gathered to take advantage of the opportunities VCUQatar had to offer to help them tap their potential in art and design.

“I feel very blessed to win this scholarship and look forward to the challenges ahead and a future career in Art and Design,” said Marianne Bermejo. Natasha Bahri said she was very excited about winning the scholarship and felt really honored to be chosen. “I would like to encourage others to try for this, it is a great opportunity. I believe that VCUQatar will give me a great platform to polish and expand my creative skills for the future,” she added.

Head of Art at Al Khor International School (British Stream) Claire Jackson said, “We are very fortunate in that we have some very dedicated and talented students here. Marianne and Natasha are both exceptional in every sense. I am completely delighted at these generous scholarship awards and proud of them both.” John White, education manager for the Al Khor International School, Bradley Roberts, head of the Secondary School and Lyal French-Wright, principal of the British Stream were also present during the ceremony.

Instituted in 2003, the VCUQatar Design Competition is open to all students who are in their senior year of high school and winners are eligible to compete for the two Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity to attend VCUQatar. The 2010 edition had 176 entries from all over the world with 40 students winning eight first prizes of $700, ten second prizes of $500 and 22 third prizes of $300. Since its inception, this competition has offered the Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarship for Creativity to 15 students from the region.
