“Pendulum” Fashion Show Taking Place On May 3

VCUarts Qatar in partnership with Nasser Bin Khaled and Mercedes-Benz is pleased to announce its 19th Annual Fashion Show “Pendulum”. The fashion show is being held at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is the official hotel sponsor of the fashion show. 

This unique show, featuring the collections of 25 sophomore, junior, and senior fashion students from VCUarts Qatar, as well as four senior students from the University’s Richmond campus, will take place on May 3, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Pendulum will showcase the individual vision, creativity, and styles of VCUarts Qatar’s students. The collections on show will present an eclectic mix of day to evening looks that reflect the singular aesthetic of each student and their individual concepts. More than 100 garments, ranging from evening wear to children’s wear will be shown at “Pendulum”.   

““Pendulum” is all about time,” said Sandra Wilkins, the Chair of VCUarts Qatar’s Fashion Design program. Wilkins joined VCUarts Qatar in 1998 and the university has been holding a series of events for faculty, staff, students and alumni to celebrate its anniversary. “Pendulum” is the university’s 19th annual fashion show. 

“The “Pendulum” theme represents our focus in establishing a design department that meets the needs of this growing and diverse industry. The whole fashion foundation of design is built on reimagining, re-proportioning, re-fabricating and making new again,” Wilkins said.

VCUarts Qatar alumna Selina Farooqui will be the guest designer at the show, where she will present her most recent collection. Her journey as a fashion designer started in August 2010, one year before she graduated at the top of her class from VCUarts Qatar. It was during her Junior year of studies that the owner of a local luxury boutique spotted one of her jackets in a fashion show and placed an order. From that first order, an entire brand, identity and vision was born. The brand image of ‘Selina Farooqui’ is a collaboration between the cultures she has grown up around, the Indian and Arabic influences, on contemporary garments. Although the two cultures are uniquely different, there is a common thread that runs through them. Ornate Indian hand embroidery and fine craftsmanship are the elements Selina wishes to keep alive through her collections. 

The fashion event is being supported by Salam Studio & Stores, The Gate Mall, Tajmeel Qatar International Beauty Academy, Bombay Silk Centre, Inglot, Tribal Gems & Jewellery, Apparel Qatar, Charming Charlie, and Sara’s Secrets.

Awards will be presented by Nasser Bin Khaled and Mercedes-Benz, Salam Studio & Stores, platforms and W Hotels. Awards will also be given for outstanding university and departmental design and academic achievements. 

“Pendulum” will take place on May 3 at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
