Nanotechnology: Design at the Nanoscale

Dr. Khaled Saoud, Assistant Professor Physics, addresses questions regarding the role of nanotechnology in our daily lives, how engineering nano-materials can be used to fulfill design needs, and how VCUQatar can use this technology to enhance design in Qatar.

Nanotechnology has the potential to transform the built environment dramatically. Nanotechnology changes how we design and how we live.

Nanotechnology is likely to change almost everything around us from medicine to computers to automobile tires and clothes. The study of nanotechnology’s implications for every aspect of our life is clearly needed. This presentation addresses questions regarding the role of nanotechnology in our daily lives, how engineering nano-materials can be used to fulfill design needs, and how VCUQatar can use this technology to enhance design in Qatar.

Looking further ahead, nanotechnologies now in research and development will likely have a significant impact on lives within the next 20 years. For example, carbon nanotubes could bring unprecedented strength and flexibility to our buildings; functional nanofibers could protect us from disease and reduce our visits to the dry cleaner. However, the full impact of nanotechnology on our lives and our environment into the next century and beyond is impossible to predict but important to consider.  

This presentation will present research activities at VCUQatar in the field of nanotechnology and design.
