Dr. Summer Bateiha is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts in Qatar. She is the recipient of two university distinguished teaching awards. Her research is devoted to understanding an area of critical mathematics instruction that relates both in content and delivery to the transformative possibilities for society at large. She has successfully authored and co-authored peer-reviewed and invited journal articles, book chapters, proceedings papers, and other works, including the two-time international award-winning culturally situated children’s book, Spring Bloom: A Math Adventure Story, co-authored with Sadia Mir and illustrated by Inna Ogando. She has also received and worked on several funded projects to improve mathematics instruction, most recently serving as principal investigator of the VCUarts-funded research lab Multimodal Mathematics: Interactivity and Cultural Relevance. The purpose of this lab is to provide an interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment that brings together scholars, practitioners, and educators in mathematics, creative writing, and art and design to create curriculum and to advance the potential of multimodal storytelling as an active element of STEM education.
