About this class

Master Study Workshop

The master study is an exploratory painting activity that allows students to learn how master artists created their paintings. In this workshop, students will reproduce historical paintings, discovering step-by-step the artist’s decisions regarding composition, color, light, and handling of the paint. Each student will choose one master painting, which they will reproduce on a smaller scale over the course of four classes. 

Class Outline

Please note that this schedule is flexible and may change according to needs arising

  1. Introduction to class and materials. Students choose which master painting they want to reproduce. Underpainting demonstration.
  2. Focus on building layers. Discuss light and shadow, as well as compositional elements. Each student will be advised on specific methods for their paintings.
  3. Glazing demonstration and work day.
  4. Complete paintings and discuss. 

Materials needed

Items to buy for this class

  • Artist-quality oil paint set with at least 10*21 ml paint tubes (Windsor & Newton is preferable)
  • 1 brush brown Taklon wash ½”
  • 1 brush set bn-7018 gold synthetic 5 pcs
  • 1 bottle medium linseed oil 75ml
  • 1 bottle medium oil Sansodor 250 ml
  • Tear off palettes
  • One small rectangular stretched canvas  (e.g. 11″ x 14” / 12″/16″ or similar)
  • Painting knife no 10 with wood handle
  • Lab coat or apron
  • 2 jars with lids for storting oil and solvent

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Zoe Hawk

Zoe is from the United States, and has lived and taught in Doha since 2011. Zoe Hawk received a BFA in studio art from Missouri State University. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting at the University of Iowa, where she also taught drawing and painting classes. She has regularly exhibited in the United States, and her work has been included in publications such as New American Paintings and The Oxford American.
