C) Portfolio Development Class C

The admissions portfolio requirements of VCUQatar emphasize creative thinking and development as being of equal importance to drawing skills.

This course will teach the necessary skills to build a competitive portfolio. Students will have time for practice and personal feedback, while developing an understanding of the vigor and value of an arts/design education at VCUQ.

Class Outline

Please note that this schedule is flexible and may change according to needs arising

Week 1:          Introduction to course, teacher, and VCUQatar; Introduction to composition; Introduction to sketch booking

Week 2:          Observational drawing / Line

Week 3:          Introduction to Color

Week 4:          Introduction to basic Value Drawing

Week 5:          Advanced Value Drawing

Week 6:          Creative Thinking: Sketchbook and Communicating Ideas

Week 7:          Using a Camera to document ideas and your work

Week 8:          Final review - preparing your portfolio

Please note: VCUQatar reserves the right to cancel classes for which not enough participants are registered. Already paid fees will be refunded.

Please do not purchase materials until VCUQatar has sent final course confirmation.

Items to buy for this class

To be bought and brought in for every class by course participants

  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Black Pilot pen (fine liner)
  • A set of colored pencils (at least 20 different colors)

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor

  • Drawing paper A3 - 5 sheets
  • Sketchbook A4
  • 2B / 4B / 6B pencils
  • Charcoal
  • Kneadable eraser

Materials that will be supplied by VCUQatar as class room materials

  • Drawing paper A3 - full pad

Hadeer Omar

Hadeer Omar, a visual communicator, Independent filmmaker and an entrepreneur with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Masters of Fine Art in Design studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Her thesis is questioning globalization as an action and culture hacking as a reaction in a specific context. Omar is the founder of an online studio called Kroki design studio. Her training experience gives her the unique ability to apply design thinking, in all its forms, to visual processes. Some of her graphics process knowledge, and experience includes commercials, social design, photography, film, digital art and mixed media. Omar represents her identity through her work. She enjoys manipulating mediums to emphasize the story behind each piece of her work.
