36) Silver Jewelry Making Basics A

An in depth study of fundamentals of Silver smith Design. Students will be introduced to cutting, filigree, hammering, soldering, polishing, filing, finishing, bezel making and stone setting in silver.

Class Outline

  1. Introduction to jewelry design and the tools and machinery necessary for its design and production.  Detailed lecture on workroom safety, sustainability and recycling of materials
  2. Filing, soldering and bezel making.   
  3. Ring Making - Stone setting, hammering and polishing of metals.  
  4. Jewelry design studio, prototype sketching
  5. Jewelry Making Chains and pendant making
  6. Creative Jewelry making, finishing and final critique

Please do not purchase materials until VCUQatar has sent final course confirmation.

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class. 

You can buy the following materials from the instructor during the first class

  • 100 grams of silver (ready made for use as wire or plate) at QAR 4.5 per gram = QAR 450.-
  • 10 grams of soldering cadium = QAR 50.-
  • 5 small semi precious stones for QAR 35 each = QAR 175.-
  • 1 packet of saw blades QAR 120.-

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.
