08) Fashion Dressmaking Basics: Skirt and Shirt

The class will focus on basic, beginner level fashion garment construction, pattern cutting, and developing various models based on the basic skirt pattern.

Students will construct a basic skirt pattern. We will develop individual skirts and study the draping ability of textiles, body figures, and basic fundamentals of design garment making. Other fabric treatments, like ruffles, tucks, pleats, finishing treatments, and many more, are included. Classes are based on both practical (workshop) and theoretical (PowerPoint presentations) study.

Class Outline

  1. How to take body measurements and measurements from garments; introduction to using sewing machines

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and to bring them to every class.

  • French curve sets
  • Pencil, 2B
  • Small scissors
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • T-square ruler

Optional: If you have your own sewing machine, feel free to bring it. You will be able to get to know it much better during the course.

There may be more materials to be purchased and brought in as the class progresses, i.e., fabric for the dresses; your lecturer will give you the necessary guidance.

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Manjulakshmi Bharathan

Manjulakshmi Bharathan has an expanded career in Design as design educator, practitioner, consultant, and researcher extending into the fields of Fashion Design, Interior Design Commercial and Residential, Jewelry Design, Merchandising, and Sustainable Design with an experience in the Qatar Design Industry for nearly a decade.

She is researching “Sustainable Design Textiles Development and Marketing in the Middle East” and holds an MBA from Mahatma Ghandi University in Kerala and a BA in Costume and Fashion Design from the University of Calicut. She is the Creative Designer of her Couture Label GILLS MANJULAKSHMI and is one of the designers who showcased her bridal and evening wear couture collection at the 7th International Fashion Show and Wedding Exhibition in 2014.
