About this class

In this class, you will learn about the basics of Turkish Embroidery, which has all the characteristics of fine art.

Turkish Embroidery can be used in daily life at every level of society – for men’s and women’s garments, i.e. robes, kaftans, underclothing, a variety of decorated scarf, shawl, waist coat, cape, handkerchiefs.

However, the most striking examples of Turkish Embroidery can be found within the soft furnishing of any house, i.e. on cushion covers, wall and door curtains, hand towels, cloth coverings, purses, bags, pillows, frames, boxes, etc. In this class you will learn the art of Turkish embroidery and embellishment.

Class Outline
  1. Basic Embroidery stitch – stem-, back-, chain-, bullion- and daisy-stitch, colonial knot
  2. The count work ( hesap işi)
  3. Turkish embroidery (türk işi)
  4. Openwork embroidery (ajurlar) – lentil-, spider web-, ladder hem-, padded-, satin- stich, needle weaving, cut work
  5. Cross stitch (kanavi çe)
  6. Maraş work embroidery (golden thread satin stitch)
  7. Antep work embroidery (ladder hem stitch)
  8. Suzeni embroidery

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class

  • Fabrics: Class 1 to 4: 1m Cotton Batiste / Class 5 to 8: 1m Linen
  • Sharp Embroidery Needles size 9
  • Tapestry Needles size 24 to 26
  • Set of embroidery cotton threads in different colors (DMC)
  • Set of Gold and silver color, yellow and grey embroidery threads (DMC)
  • Pencil
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Tracing paper
  • Fine Bladed Scissors

Further Materials needed may be indicated by the lecturer as the course progresses

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Arzu Demirok

Arzu Demirok is a Turkish Embroidery and Embellishment Teacher coming from Ankara. She has lived and taught her art in various different countries in Europe, Australia and now Arabia and has written and published a series of articles and a book ‘History in a Dowry Box’ to introduce the subject to a wider audience.
