Working primarily from observation, the goal of the class is for students to hone their perceptual skills and leave with a new understanding of light and color. Students will be introduced to the materials and basic techniques that are the foundation of oil painting.
Day 1: Introduction to materials and tools; color lecture and color-mixing exercise using small canvas panel.
Day 2: Begin a single object painting, using small canvas panel. Attempt to depict clear, lit, geometric planes, reflected light and reflected color.
Day 3: Discuss various brushwork techniques. Palette knife painting exercise on small panel.
Day 4: Slide Lecture on gestural painting, action painting, expressionism. Action painting exercise on medium panel.
Day 5: Indirect Painting lecture. Begin underpainting on stretched canvas.
Day 5: Continue indirect painting by building up layers of color over the underpainting.
Day 6: Work Day
Day 8: Finish portrait

Zoe is from the United States, and has lived and taught in Doha since 2011. Zoe Hawk received a BFA in studio art from Missouri State University. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting at the University of Iowa, where she also taught drawing and painting classes. She has regularly exhibited in the United States, and her work has been included in publications such as New American Paintings and The Oxford American.
