About this class

The admissions portfolio requirements for VCUarts Qatar emphasize creative thinking and development as being of equal importance to drawing skills. This course will teach the necessary skills to build a competitive portfolio. Students will have time for practice and receiving personal feedback, while developing an understanding of the vigor and value of an arts/design education at VCUarts Qatar.

Class Outline

Please note that this schedule is flexible and may be subject to change 

Week 1:         

  • Introduction to course, instructor, and VCUarts Qatar.
  • Introduction to creative and critical thinking.
  • Introduction to digital and analog art journal/sketchbook; communicating ideas and design/art process.

Week 2 :         

  • Introduction to principles and elements of art/design.
  • Introduction to Color.

Week 3 :         

  • Using a camera to document your ideas and work
  • Digital and analog documentation of your art/process.
  • Introduction to prospective and composition.

Week 4:         

  • Introduction to model making.

Week 5:         

  • Observational Drawing/Line Drawing.
  • Introduction to Basic Value Drawing.

Week 6:         

  • Advanced Value Drawing.

Week 7:         

  • Introduction to time-based media.

Week 8:         

  • Final Review – Preparing your Portfolio.

Sultana Jesmine

Sultana Jesmine is an interdisciplinary designer and researcher with passion for life-long
learning, experimentation and teaching. Her current research interest merges human-centered
design, play, and neuroscience while utilizing digital and analog technologies. Sultana has a
degree in MFA in Design Studies and Double BFA degrees in Interior Design & Fashion Design
from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has experience in research, exhibition design,
product design, video production, projects and events management, residential and commercial
interior design, fashion design and leadership training.
