05) Silk Painting (Basics)

Course participants will learn basic and more advanced Silk Painting techniques, i.e. basic resist and paint application, embellishing works with sugar / salt crystals, wet on wet, blending, shading and somple batik techniques, fixing and finishing

Class Outline

1) Preparation/ Stretching the silk,  drawing, and application of Resist;

2) Application of Silk Paints with bending, shading and Water effect;

3) Salt texture effect;

4) Batik Application- basic and medium level;

5) fixation of colors.

Please note: VCUQatar reserves the right to cancel classes for which not enough participants are registered. Already paid fees will be refunded.

Please do not purchase materials until VCUQatar has sent final course confirmation.

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials and bring them to every class - 

  • 2 nos  50 cm / 50 cm fine 100% silk pieces
  • 2 nos Gutta Liner black and gold for silk (i.e. from Marabou)=
  • 1 Tracing Pencil
  • 1 adjustable wooden frame – 1 set of at least 45 cm / 45 cm
  • 1 box of three pinned Silk thumbs tacks to stretch silk pieces onto frames
  • Fine Nibs applicator for Gutta tube
  • 6 silk paints
  • 1 palette
  • Tool kit
  • 3 brushes
  • Salts
  • Wax.

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Rashmi Agarwal

Rashmi was born in India to a well-educated family and is presently living in the State of Qatar. After completion of her professional degrees in law and commerce, she pursued her passion - the art of silk painting. The mesmerizing world of colours and intricacies of design and patterns on silk never cease to intrigue her. She is on the Board of Directors for Silk Painters International (SPIN), a member of the Fine Art America, The GSP international forum, and several other forums. She is also a Founder and President of MAPS art community in Qatar. She also conducts silk art courses and workshops for adults and children in her Art Studio. After holding a series of exhibitions featuring her silk paintings on various mediums, Rashmi Agarwal wants to enter the fashion world with her designer scarves that pack in a brilliant burst of colours, East-West fusions, and Middle Eastern motifs.
