About this class

This class is all about creativity and exploring your artistic abilities beyond your limits. Participants will learn different printing techniques, such as screen printing, stencil making and woodblock printing. Basic drawing, painting and collage-making will also be an essential part of the class in
order to create balanced and meaningful designs. 

Students will have the opportunity to explore and discover different aspects of graphic and print design, allowing them to express their thoughts and ideas on different mediums. They will also learn about culture, history, socio-economics and graphic design.

Class Outline
  1. Class introductions and discussing student expectations. The students will explore thoughts and ideas that they want to convey in their artwork.
  2. They will learn how to draw to create stencils of screen printing. Mix media discovery, illustration and stencil making.
  3. Screen Printing demo. They will learn how to pull prints on paper.
  4. Introduction to woodblock printing using linoleum sheets. Carving session where students will learn how to create “stamps” using the images that they have drawn on the linoleum block.
  5. Woodblock printing demo. The students will be translating their illustrations into woodblock prints.
  6. Conclusion of the class where the instructor and the students discuss if they have met their expectations for the class.

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class.

  • Drawing Pad
  • Pencils and Markers

  • X-acto knife and blades
  • Thick masking tape (2-3 inches thick)
  • Printing ink (acrylic non-toxic fabric ink)
  • Screens and squeegee (available at Jarir Bookstore)
  • Soft Sponge
  • Spatula
  • Plain Tshirt/ Fabric
  • Apron
  • Linoleum Blocks and carving tools (available at Jarir Bookstore)
  • Paintbrush

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Catherine Chiuco

Catherine Chiuco is a Graphic Design alumna from VCUQatar. She previously worked for the Center for Research, Design and Entrepreneurship at VCUQatar and also volunteers for Reach Out to Asia where she teaches do-it-yourself (DIY) screen printing to young artists in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

In her work, Chiuco strives to collaborate with young artists and designers from different cultures and backgrounds to gain further understanding about the diversity of the world. She focuses on graphic design, photography, print making and illustration.
